Factsheets
As a member you can any or all of the factsheets below when you join or at any time. They contain the pick of the articles in Brewer's Contact, updated as necessary as well as some unpublished work we couldn't squeeze in.
- No 1 Water treatment using Brupaks Professional Brewing Aids - if you think there's a better way of preparing your liquor than boiling with gypsum, cooling, decanting and re-heating you're right. This updated factsheet tells you how and has a reference to a computer spreadsheet prepared by Nigel Porter to make the calculations easier. (4 pages).
- No 2 Yeast strains and culture contains articles by Peter Fawcett, Gillian Grafton, Bob Renvoize and David Edge on yeast. These cover selecting dried and liquid strains, storage, propagation and pitching. (8 pages).
- No 3 Starting and Running a Craft Brewing Group (currently unavailable) contains advice compiled by the Midlands Craft Brewers from their experiences of starting what is now a most successful group; it incorporates comments from other groups too. If you fancy plugging one of the gaps (Home Counties, Tyne and Tees; and South West spring to mind) have a look. (4 pages).
- No 4 Books and book reviews (currently unavailable) - reviews from the pages of Brewer's Contact are supplemented by some from Gillian Grafton's original UKHB website plus a few more. The list also includes books we know of that haven't been reviewed - please do contribute reviews and indeed add your own opinion if it's different. (8 pages).
- No 5 Fermentation contains technical articles originally written in the late 1990s by Tim O'Rourke. At that time he was Education Director of the Institute of Brewing. The information is just as relevant today, although it's interesting to see how commercial brewing has changed. (6 pages).
- No 6 Old British Beers (currently unavailable) celebrates the work of Dr John Harrison and the Durden Park Beer Circle in unearthing the records of old beers. The compilation is intended as a complement to the Durden Park book and contains articles contributed to BC by Dr Harrison and James McCrorie as well as some new material covering books, materials and brewing techniques. (11 pages).
- No 7 Brewer's Contact Subject Index lists articles in Brewer's Contact from issue 1. The index is also on the website as are copies of all back issues more than a year old, so this is aimed at our members who don't use the internet. Back issues are available from the Membership Secretary.
- No 8 Refractometers - the article published in Brewer's Contact June 2006 plus the tables. (6 pages).
- No 9 Malt - the 2003 'Malt Special' that never was - the articles were broken up and published separately, now brought together and republished. The Brupaks guide to malt is included as well. (18 pages).
- No 10 Mashing (currently unavailable) - a selection of articles from the basic to the advanced, including a comprehensive article by the Midlands Craft Brewers that was too long for publication in Brewer's Contact. (18 pages).
